Governor Brown Signs SB 672!
The California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) is pleased to report that Senate Bill 672 has been signed by Governor Brown. SB 672 (Hernandez) will add pharmacists practicing in hospitals to the list of healthcare professionals whose peer review proceedings and records are protected from discovery. SB 672 will ultimately help encourage additional pharmacist involvement in the medical peer review process; modifying Section 1157 of the Evidence Code.
Existing law protects from discovery the proceedings and records of peer review bodies for a variety of healthcare professionals. However, pharmacists practicing in hospitals who participate in peer review are currently not included in the list of healthcare professionals who receive peer review protections. This bill would add hospital pharmacists to the list. This commonsense bill will remedy an oversight in the law and will help encourage additional pharmacist involvement in the medical peer review process.
CSHP thanks Senator Hernandez for his continued leadership in advancing the pharmacy profession. Just as importantly, CSHP thanks all the members who wrote in letters of support — your voices were heard!
