Become an expert in grassroots lobbying techniques and actively participate in the legislative and regulatory process. Recommend the positions and priorities for legislative action on bills before the state legislature that are of interest to CSHP and impact the practice of pharmacy.  CSHP’s Government Affairs Committee plays a central role in advancing the profession of pharmacy in California and relies on volunteers like you to make it happen. The time commitment for this committee consists of approximately 30 hours per term.

  • Identify solutions to improve the pharmacy profession and recommend specific legislative efforts to the CSHP Board.

  • Analyze pending legislation and regulations that impact the practice of pharmacy and, taking action as needed. Monitor a reasonable number of pending legislation (for example, 25-50 bills annually).

  • Collaborate with/participate in regulatory agencies that impact the practice of health-system pharmacy and provide guidance. For example, attend the California State Board of Pharmacy (BOP) meetings in your region, attend other health regulatory agency public meetings, provide comments during public comment periods, provide public comment/testimony, etc.

  • Promote grassroots advocacy to increase member participation in influencing legislation and regulations.

  • Foster relationships with legislators and staffers at the local, state, and national levels (e.g. routinely meet with your elected officials and assist others to do so).

  • Identify members who will collaborate with staff to provide expertise and testimony in legislative and regulatory matters.

  • Pursue legislative committee and regulatory coordination with other organizations (e.g., California Pharmacists Association, California Medical Association, California Hospital Association, or the California State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Serve as Affiliate Chapter liaison for government affairs where possible.

  • Administer Grassroots Advocates Recognition Program, including but not limited to developing application materials, reviewing applications, making selections, and notifying awardees.

  • Participate in external organizations, events, or programs.

  • Publish CJHP articles on advocacy, legislative/regulatory involvement, and collaborative efforts with key stakeholders.
