To say that Dr. Chen’s career in the pharmacy profession is impressive does not do his accomplishments justice. Even “extraordinary” does not quite capture the essence of his passion and dedication behind his significant and sustained contributions to pharmacy practice in California. According to Marilyn Stebbins, PharmD, FCSHP, Dr. Chen “has continually set the trend of incorporating the pharmacist on the care team to provide comprehensive medication management.” He “has become an avid advocate for advance practice pharmacists and technicians and for expanding the scope of practice for pharmacists” through legislative efforts. It is a well-known fact that Dr. Chen is an innovator and leader in the profession in addition to being a great mentor to pharmacy students, residents, and pharmacists. His “commitment to professional service” and to the “training and education of our next generation” will have rippling effects in the world of pharmacy for years to come.
Reporting on Dr. Chen’s “most groundbreaking and innovative achievement” that being a twelve million dollar grant from the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Innovations, Michelle Chu, PharmD, BCACP, shares that “he designed a unique clinical pharmacy team to target a high-risk, high-cost patient population…which resulted in a reduction in mortality and acute care utilizations while improving overall health quality. His project solidified the role of pharmacists performing comprehensive medication management and proved how pharmacy technicians are utilized in a non-conventional way to assist pharmacists in contemporary settings.”
Recognized as a pioneer in the field of ambulatory care pharmacy for almost 30 years, “Dr. Chen, with great personal and professional sacrifice, has tirelessly served the profession” says Ryan Gates, PharmD, CDE. “What makes his contributions so extraordinary, however, is that the passion and motivation behind his service is not principally to advance the profession of pharmacy, but to truly do his best to serve his fellow man and alleviate human suffering. The advancement of the profession is simply a by-product of his great work that he truly sees as a calling.”
Dr. Chen currently works as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and is also an Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Southern California school of Pharmacy. He has held multiple positions with USC since 1990.
