Balancing Unpredictable IV Supply With The Demand For Safe Practices
Hosted by: Fresenius-Kabi

Description: Providing safe and effect intravenous drug therapy has become extremely challenging during extended periods of drug shortages. Ongoing lack of availability of some medications and fluids has resulted in changes in administration expectations and behaviors at times leading to unsafe injection practices, compromised care, and potentially harmful errors. Experts from the institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) will discuss practical recommendations for optimizing the safety of intravenous medication use during times of drug shortages.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the primary safety issues associated with intravenous fluid and drug shortages.
  • Describe current at-risk behaviors identified due to ongoing drug/fluid shortages.
  • Prioritize strategies and remove barriers to safe preparation and administration of intravenous medications during drug and fluid shortages.
  • Discuss the practitioner's role in error prevention and how to adopt safe medication practices during critical drug shortages.
  • Discuss how a manufacturer is responding to the drug shortages.
